Design and Technology Curriculum Statement

Design and technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.  Projects are used to deepen understanding of topics and provide memorable experiences. Children are taught the Design, Make and Evaluate cycle from an early age and use this process as they create a variety of finished products. The design and technology curriculum gives children opportunities to explore cookery, mechanisms and different structures. Children take great pride in making things as part of their homework and school is often filled with amazing models that children have created in their own time.

Children in Key Stage 1 explore general styles and innovations from across the decades. This knowledge and understanding applied to simple projects. For example making a model castle, Tudor house or even inventing a new toy! Projects are designed to develop understanding of other curriculum areas but also to give opportunities for children to develop more specific technical skills. In Key stage 2 projects move from being models towards more functional products. Children learn about the work and techniques of specific influential designers, architects and engineers. They work from design specifications and are more able to improve and adapt their work.
